Peacock Bass Fishing in Miami
02/11/2011
Yesterday I took a trip for Peacock Bass in the Miami Airport Lakes. I fished with Alan Zaremba and Martin Arostegui. Some of you may know Marti. He holds numerous current IGFA World Records for fish he has caught from across the Globe. He is very nice person to fish with, and his knowledge and expertise are renowned. It was a pleasure to fish with him. We saw a good number ...

Tying the Gartside Gurgler
31/07/2011
The Gurgler, invented by the late fly tier and iconoclast Jack Gartside, is one of those all-around useful patterns than will catch everything from panfish to tarpon. It's sort of the topwater version of a Woolly Bugger, and like the Bugger, it can be tied in many different sizes and colors, with a variety of materials and accoutrements. Gartside wrote about his creation:
First off, the Gurgler?by virtue of its upturned ...

Tarpon and Bass
Today we have a west wind as another front approaches. Bass are on in the glades with catches of 100 fish possible. Throw poppers on the edges and if that doesnt work try a sinking fly.
Last week my clients went 3 for 25 (or more) on fly for tarpon in two trips. On friday the wind was "gale force" with rain but we had to go and ...

Water temps have been in the sixties most areas, however if you check out a sat photo of water temps you will see that the gulf ...

Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report
The weather here in central Florida has been mostly cold and unpredictable but the flats fishing has been consistently good. Redfish and black drum have been abundant with most of the fish being found in schools of 25-200 fish. They have been willing to eat a variety of well placed small soft plastics and flies. Both the reds and drum have been feeding in very shallow water ...

Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report
There is still much speculation going around about the effects of the big freeze we experienced at the beginning of the year. Mosquito Lagoon Redfishing Report Jan 2010
31/01/2010
The fishing in Mosquito Lagoon had been hit by the 10 day long cold spell which dropped the water temperatures so low and for so long that it severely effected some of the fish populations, as well as the birds, turtles and alligators. Here is the latest word from Alan regarding the South Florida Peacock bite.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
It's summer time full swing, this means a lot of hoping around to find the more active fish or more territorial type fish but this also means more variety. The past few days have produced Red Midas cichlids, Jaguar Gaupote, Snakeheads, peacock bass, largemouth bass Mayan cichlids and a few Oscars. Yes, it's on the warm side but we ...

RHS Condo lake latest.
28/07/2009
Fished the lake again yesterday to make sure it was not a fluke the other day. In the first 10 casts I had 9 takes and 2 hook ups. Seems like this is a great find, despite the colour of the water. It would seem that the lake is self contained and therefore does not have a flow of water through it. Hence the algal bloom. Further reports to come ...

RHS Condo lake comes up trumps
27/07/2009
I have only ever fished the RHS Condo Lake once before, and dismissed it as it seemed to be shallow. However, I decided to give it a go yesterday, and what a revelation. I was a bit put off when I poled up on the bank to see it Pea Soup looking with an algal bloom. Very different to the LHS Condo lake, which is clear and tannin in colour. ...

Chris Myers Fishing Report 17-07-09
19/07/2009
Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report
This July has been anything but typical for the first two weeks of the month. The water level is higher than usual and the normally slick calm mornings have been few and far between. Places that have held lots of tailing redfish during recent summers have not been very productive and the big tarpon have yet to arrive in our inshore waters. The big redfish have been ...

Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report
Fishing in Mosquito Lagoon has been very good the past couple weeks with plenty of large redfish along with trout, big ladyfish, voracious bluefish, and tarpon.
Sunday the 14th, New Jersey anglers Eric and Tom had shots at full grown redfish before the sun even broke the horizon. Before long, the fish took off for deeper water and we moved up shallow to look for tailing reds. Throughout ...

Fly Tying Video - 1
16/07/2009
The Toad Fly
The Toad fly was invented by Gary Merriman (owner of the The Fish Hawk in Atlanta, Georgia). It is a light weight, slow sinking fly designed for Tarpon fishing in the flats. The original version employed a rabbit strip for the tail. Later, the fly was changed by Captain Tim Hoover when he tied some toads with marabou for Andy Mill. The marabou version is now more popular ...

Captain Dave Hunt - Report
13/07/2009
Lots of small summer tarpon around in the park. Look for them on the outgoing tide in deep spots next to the mangroves. They are feeding on small minnows of various types.
Try small clousers of pink and white. You will find snook and redfish near mullet muds. Pole the edges of the muds. My anglers have had lots of shots at big reds and snook. The fly I have using ...

Alan Zaremba Update 7th. July.
07/07/2009
Fishing in the Everglades has been extremely tough due to high water and a very slow bite! The urban canals are producing fair catches, I guess you could say the dog days of summer are here. It still beats the heck out of being in the office and I have some openings in August and hope some of you can still make it down.
My mid week report is a ...

Alan Zaremba - Fishing update 2nd. July
02/07/2009
Fishing in the urban canals continues to produce good catches of peacock bass up to 6 pounds. The rains have been coming everyday but the fishing is still good though I am having to dodge the showers and deal with a lot of moving water. For those of you that like to fish the marsh areas out in the Everglades the water levels are up and the yes the fish ...

Alan Zarembas Latest Catches
24/06/2009
Fishing is good in many of the local urban canals and in some of the canals out to the west in the Everglades. I am still running a summer special to get the kids out fishing. I suggest half day trips for the kids as the heat is there. I have plenty of openings over the next few weeks and hope some of you can make it on down.

Last nights Tarpon action
21/06/2009
I should say lack of it! There were 3 individual Tarpon in the lake, but they were rolling very infrequently, making it difficult to predict where to put the fly. Needless to say, in this instance the Tarpon won the game! Well there is always another day, and the boot maybe on the other foot at our next meeting.

Peacock Bass Walk Up Fishing
20/06/2009
Decided to go and seek out some Peacock Bass yesterday. I must say that the pairs I found were not ultra aggressive. They were either pairing up, trying to find a bed or just mooching about. However, I did manage to find a pair that were locked in, and that is when they are more likely to be agreesive towards you fly. In trying to find the right pair, I ...

Myan Cichlid and Speck Catches
19/06/2009
Last night was a revelation. The lake here at the Condo was on fire with Mayan Cichlid action. These fiesty fish are ready to nail your offering, and besides sight fishing for them, blind casting over light patches of bottom works too.
At the moment, these fish are weighing in at an average of 11/2 lbs a piece, and if you tackle up accordingly, can give a good account of ...

Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Trip
17/06/2009
The trip up to the lagoon was uneventfull, except that I had to stop off to get some quarters as the Beachline Expressway is a Toll road. Getting up at 3.15 for a 3.45 departure sees me doing something that I though that I gave up when I was younger. However, being on the water for 5.40 before the sun was up was special. The thought of those huge Redfish that ...

Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Trip
12/06/2009
Hopefully this comming week there will be fish in and around Mosquito Lagoon. The word from Chris Myers is that there are more than just Reds in the lagoon and some Tarpon are showing up too. Add to that the prospect of Ladyfish (something I have yet to catch on the Fly) and Trout, it should be a good trip. Here is a picture of a catch from one of Captain ...
